TAKE CARE
Featuring - Marina Peng
October 20, 2017 - December 1, 2017
50/50 presents Take Care, a solo-exhibition by St. Louis artist Marina Peng. Take Care features a series of installation and new media works that call attention to the daily emotional labor that marginalized individuals take on silently. The exhibition explores different coping mechanisms that these individuals use to defend, watch out for, and take care of themselves in spaces where they are subject to tokenism, micro-aggressions, gaslighting, discrimination, or violence.
Performance begins at 7 p.m.
Marina Peng (b. Baton Rouge, LA) is a St. Louis-based multi-media installation artist. She received her BFA from Washington University in St. Louis. Marina has been awarded residencies at OTIS College of Art & Design (Los Angeles, CA), Paul Artspace (St. Louis, MO), and Caldera Arts (Sisters, Oregon). Take Care is the first solo-exhibition of her work, presented by 50/50.

This exhibition was selected as a part of 50/50's first Open Call for Exhibition Proposals and was proposed by Marina Peng.
About the Open Call for Exhibition Proposals:
50/50 opened it's first call for exhibition proposals in April 2017. This announcement was made in conjunction with ATTACH FILES, 50/50's first exhibition of the year inviting participants to submit 8.5x11" images to print and have displayed in the gallery. The open call for exhibition proposals was not restrictive to geographic region or to age. 50/50's staff decided to select two proposals, one for an August exhibition, ANOTHER COUNTRY and one for an October exhibition, TAKE CARE. Emphasis for these selections was placed on submissions that exemplify 50/50's mission:
50/50 is a platform for fostering progressive dialogues of equally exhibited local and national artists. With an emphasis on exhibiting emerging to mid-career artists who take risks within varying disciplines, 50/50 will broaden Kansas City’s art ecology. Constructed from two shipping containers, the venue will expand upon the concept of 50/50 while activating unused urban space in the West Bottoms.
Each selected proposal is provided administrative support and resources. This includes stipends per exhibiting artist paid by 50/50, graphic design work for didactic materials, marketing and more.
