In an effort to analyze the many facets of contemporary art making, language has been revisited time and time again by artists, critics, and historians alike since 1960. One of the many examples includes Liz Kotz, theorist and art historian who famously catalogues this history in her book, “Words to be Looked At”. In short, this book considers the works of the many canonical, male 1960’s artists such as Carl Andre, Robert Smithson, and Joseph Kosuth to name a few. Many of these works include language being reduced of object and meaning, and “considers the paradox of artists living in a time of social upheaval who use words but chose not to make statements with them.”1 Since the 1960’s, this history has changed but still continues, and THINGS TO BE READ seeks to be the second read to this conversation by aptly being titled the second half of the Robert Smithson essay, ‘Words to be looked at, Things to be read’, of which Kotz also titled her book.
In this exhibition, four artists utilize text in four different ways. Completed between 2014-2015, these works are inherently associated with the social art history of the post-millennial era (which is commonly associated with the social upheaval of the 1960’s). Conversely, these artists react to the social “upheaval” of the present day in a more confrontational manner and many through a Postcolonial and globalized lense.
THINGS TO BE READ seeks to not be the end cap of this linguistic history, but rather serve as a platform for potential in seeing this history grow. For more information on the exhibiting artists, visit http://www.5050kc.com/programs/

Patricia Bordallo Dibildox (KC)
Patricia Bordallo Dibildox (b. 1993, San Luis Potosí, San Luis Potosí, México) is an artist based out of Kansas City, Missouri. Her work explores her own femininity, sexuality and culture through the exploitation of a photograph's limitations. She enjoys working with scanners and uses her iPhone 4 to light the majority of her photographs.
Patricia loves carrot juice, her Beagle pup and laying on grass. She will be working at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, Italy until December 2015.
Brett Ginsburg (KC)
Brett Ginsburg (b. 1990 Kansas City, Kansas) is a visual artist currently living and working in Kansas City, Missouri. His practice considers material, metaphor, and location through image and object. He is also a co-founder of Arena, a creative and curatorial group operating through various outlets to materialize unrealized projects.
Julian Chams (NY)
Julian Chams (b. 1989, Barranquilla, Colombia) is a visual artist currently living and working in Brooklyn, New York. Born in Barranquilla, Colombia, he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Kansas City Art Institute and is currently a Van Lier Visual Artist Fellow at Wave Hill in the Bronx, NY. Chams has had solo exhibitions at Wave Hill, Bronx, NY; Splatterpool, Brooklyn, NY; ARS Antiqua Galería, Barranquilla, Colombia; and Parallel Gallery, Kansas City, MO. His work has been featured in group shows at, among others, the Bronx Museum of the Arts; XV Salón Regional de Artistas, Zona Caribe, Arte Corrosivo, Cartagena, Colombia; and Alliance Française, Barranquilla, Colombia. He was festival coordinator and editorial assistant for the Video Art & Experimental Film Festival at Tribeca Cinemas in New York City.
Kameelah Janan Rasheed (NY)
Kameelah Janan Rasheed (b. 1985, East Palo Alto, CA) is a research-based conceptual artist, writer and educator. A Brooklyn-based artist-archivist, her work reckons with the complexity of memory, ritual, historiography, and archival practices as they relate to the construction of both personal and social histories. She creates archival installations, prose, conceptual poems, text-based prints, photographs, audio mixes, and public programming that consider the archive as a site of agency to explore our active and passive roles in both the production and consumption of hermetic private histories as well as larger public histories.
A 2006 Amy Biehl U.S. Fulbright Scholar to South Africa, Rasheed holds an Ed.M (2008) in Secondary Education from Stanford University as well as a BA (2006) in Public Policy and Africana Studies from Pomona College.
Currently, she is the Arts Editor for SPOOK Magazine and a contributing editor at The New Inquiry. In the past, she has been a museum educator at Brooklyn Museum, worked as a member of East Palo Alto's city planning commission and taught social studies to high school students.

El esfuerzo por analizar las múltiples facetas del arte contemporáneo donde el lenguaje ha sido visitada de nuevo una y otra vez por los artistas, los críticos y los historiadores, desde 1960. Uno de los muchos ejemplos incluye Liz Kotz, quien es teórico e historiador de arte de sus famoso catálogos donde narra esta historia en su libro, "Palabras Para Ser Mirado". Patricia Bordallo Dibildox (KC)
Patricia Bordallo Dibildox (b. 1993, San Luis Potosí, San Luis Potosí, México) es una artista basado de Kansas City, Missouri. Su trabajo explora su propia feminidad, sexualidad y cultura a través de la explotación de las limitaciones de una fotografía. Ella gusta trabajar con escáneres y utiliza su iPhone 4 a la luz la mayoría de ella fotografías.
Patricia le encanta el jugo de zanahoria, su perrito Beagle, y pone en la hierba. Va a trabajar en la Colección de Peggy Guggenheim en Venecia, Italia, hasta diciembre de 2015.
